Mother Nature Again Creates Havoc for Am Tour.

Streetsboro, OH- Mother Nature again was not favorable to the contestants of the Golf Channel Am Tour of Cleveland as the rough again was not able to be mowed and played very wet, thick, and tough.  Having to make special rules considerations for the unusual length and unplayability of the rough, tour officials had to declare the rough as "abnormal playing grounds" under rule 25-2.  This allowed the player to take a free drop at the point of where the ball crossed into the "abnormal grounds" (rough) with out penalty only if they lost their ball in the rough.  If the ball was found in the rough, it must be played from its spot or take other options with penalty.

With these rules in place, it was Rob Adamson (91) who defeated John Wozniak (95) in the Championship Flight.

In the Palmer Flight, it was Joseph Smith (79) who defeated Tylor Davis (80) by 1 shot.   Smith had built up a 4-stroke lead on the back nine by shooting 1-over par then held on after the turn as Davis was trying to make it a match with a late rally.  John Smallenburg finished in 3rd place with a 85.  It was Smith's 2nd win of the season.

For the 2nd event in a row in the Hogan Flight, it was Abram Boyd (83)  defeating Ed Ruper(84) by 1-stroke.  Dale Thompson also tied for 2nd shooting 84.  The 3-way battle for the title was very close throughout the round.  Ruper was again on form making 2 more birdies in his round and all 3 players were tied going into the par-5 18th hole.  It was Boyd who made par and walked away with the trophy.

In the Sarazen Flight,  it was expecting father Ed Newland who took away the hardware shooting an 81 and defeating Jeff Mast (86) by 5-strokes.  Ben Hall and Denny Briceland finished 3rd with 88's.  Newland was solid in his play turning in 40 and making 9 pars and a birdie in his round.

In the Senior Sarazen Flight, it was Kurt Beler (85) who held off Charles Blasdel (86) by 1-stroke.  Joseph Scholtz (89) finished in 3rd.  In a back and forth match which outside of the first couple of holes, the lead never was more than 2-strokes, it was Beler who held a 2-stroke lead and held on at the 18th to win.

In the Jones Flight, it was Ted Heindel who won his 2nd tournament of the season by shooting an 87.  He defeated Raymone Scott (88) by 1-stroke.  Scott Cummings finished in 3rd place with a 92.  Heindel cruised out to a 6-shot lead an saw it start to evaporate by a 1-over par stretch in 5 holes by Raymone Scott.  Heindel was able to hang on though on the last hole for the victory.

The next evet is going to be held on May 28th at Little Mountain Country Club in Concord, Ohio.  It is the sister course to Stonewater Country Club which was played a few weeks ago.

We would also like to thank everyone for keeping up with the 50/50 raffle benefiting the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.  Thusfar, we have raised close to $750 dollars and are well on our was towards our goal.

Tough Conditions Make For a Hard Day at Stonewater.

Highland Heights, OH- It has not been the greatest start of the golfing season here in Northeast Ohio as rain has plagued the area and made many of the courses in the area much tougher than they normally will play.  With US Open type rough very thick and trapping many of the balls hit in its direction, the course played very long and challenging.

In the Palmer Flight, Joseph Smith shot an 88 and took the title holding off James Brundage (94) and Tom Betras (95).  Smith had came back on the back nine to gain the lead and hold off Brundage who took a 4-stroke lead after 9 holes.

In the Hogan Flight, Abram Boyd won his 2nd tournament in as many attempts as he shot an 84 defeating Ed Ruper (85) by 1 shot.  Kevin Double finished in 3rd place with an 87.  Despite 3 birdies from Ed Ruper during his round, it was not enough as Boyd rallied from 4-strokes down in the final holes to sneek out the win on the 18th.  It was a very competitive flight this week as 13 players competed and the top 6 spots were only separated by 6 shots.

In the Sarazen Flight, 12 golfers competed and it was Jeff Mast who picked up his 2nd win of the season shooting an 81.  He coasted through his round making 2 birdies and led throughout and finished 7-strokes ahead of the field.  He also posted the low round of the day on the course.  Dave Cress (88) finished 2nd and Matt Blum and Michael Yates tied for 3rd both shooting 92.

In the Jones Flight it was Edward Kocin (96) who bested Kevin Allen (132).

In the Snead Flight, Charles Burger (96) won in a playoff over Raymone Scott (96) on the 1st hole to capture his 2nd win of the season.  Bob Troha (101) finished 3rd.

The next tournament is at Boulder Creek on May 14th.  Hopefully the weather will turn around soon here in Northeast Ohio.

Stonewater Golf Club hosts Golf Channel Am Tour of Cleveland Sunday

The 2nd event on the schedule for the Am Tour of Cleveland will roll into Highland Heights, Ohio to play Stonewater Golf Club on Sunday, May 8th.  The Hurdzan and Fry built golf course has hosted the former Nationwide Tour Legend Group Classic and many USGA Mid-Amateur and US Open local qualifiers.

Come join us for this tournament on Sunday, May 8th.  You don't want to miss one of the best courses in Northeast Ohio!

Am Tour of Cleveland Kicks Off Season At Sawmill Creek.

Huron, Ohio- The Golf Channel Am Tour of Cleveland hosted its season opening event on Saturday, April 30th, at the Sawmill Creek Resort.  Playing in cold and damp weather, it has not been the ideal conditions that most Northeast Ohio golfers wanted in the beginning of their season.  The course had taken on 3 inches of rain in the last 10 days and 2 inches of it came at once on Monday before the tournament.  Thanks to the great effort of the course's maintenance staff to mow the rough and pump water out of the bunkers all morning, the tournament was enjoyable to the 30 participants that played in 5 divisions.

Starting with the Palmer Flight Dustin Cramer fired an 83 to beat Tom Betras (84) by 1 stroke.  Tylor Davis (86) finished in 3rd place.  It was Betras who led by 1 on the 18th tee but Dustin Cramer pulled it out by making a par.

In the Hogan Flight Abram Boyd (87) won by building a large lead on the front nine in route to shooting a 42 and then held on to defeat Ed Ruper (91) by 4 strokes.  Dave Hout (94) finished in 3rd place.

Sarazen Flight winner Matt Blum (88) was looking for redemption as last week in Pittsburgh he held the lead going into the last hole only to lose by 1.  This time he held the lead early by shooting a 39 on the front and went on to defeat Justin Petty (90) by 2 strokes.  Ed Newland finished in 3rd place shooting a 92.

Redemption was also on the mind of Jones Flight winner Ted Heindel (90) who lost in a playoff the week before in Pittsburgh.  Once again Heindel found himself going back out onto the course after being tied with playing partner Scott Cummings (90).  It was a back and forth match between the two players.  Neither player had led in the match by more than 2 strokes and Cummings had taken a 2 stroke lead into the last hole.  On the 1st playoff hole Ted Heindel had hit the green in 2 and 3-putted for bogey which defeated Scott Cummings' double bogey.  Greg Argenti (97) finished in 3rd place.

In the Snead Flight, Daniel Schivitz (93) won by 6 strokes over Greg Nemchick (99).  Going into the 15th hole the match was tied and Daniel played the last 4 holes in 1-over par, including a birdie on the tough par-3 17th hole.  Ronald Shoemaker (102) finished in 3rd place.

The Golf Channel Am Tours of Cleveland and Pittsburgh are joining forces to hold a 50-50 raffle at each event to benefit the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.  At this weeks event, 130 dollars were raised.  65 dollars went to the winner of the drawing, Greg Argenti, and the other 65 dollars will be put with the donations from all of the events this year.  To date this season a total of 220 dollars have been raised for the JDRF.  Thank You!
