Plymouth, IN- The 3rd major of the season for the Northeast Section of the Golf Channel Am Tour is in the books and the Cleveland Tour represented themselves very well at the event. With great weather to play in as temperatures were in the low to mid 80's with partly cloudy skies and no rain after rain had dampened the course during the week before the event. The Black and the Silver Courses at the Swan Lake Resort were the co-host courses to 183 golfers in 11 different divisions as they played to decide who would win their flight of the Heartland Open.
In the Championship Flight, it was Sam DiPaola III who finished in 7th place for the Cleveland Tour. He shot 77-84 for a 2-day total of 151 and finished 6 strokes back of 3rd place.
In the Palmer Flight, Tylor Davis bounced back with a 2nd round 81 for a 2-day combined total of 171 and also finished in 7th place in his flight. He moved up from 11th position at the end of day 1 and finished 5 strokes away from 3rd place.
In the Hogan Flight, it was Cleveland's triangle of competitors that placed well. Jeff Mast took Cleveland's top honors as he shot a 2-day total of 159 (84-75) and finished in 3rd place. Mast earned an automatic qualifying spot at the 2011 National Championship at PGA West for his finish. He also took 2nd day medalist honors on the Silver Course for his flight. Dale Thompson shot a 2-day total of 166 (89-77) move up the ladder and finish tied for 11th. Ed Ruper finished with a 2-day total of 175 (86-89) and took a tie for 18th.
In the Sarazen Flight, Matt Blum started day 2 in a tie for 6th place. Blum, however, found trouble early in route to a 2nd round 95 and finished in 11th place at a 2-day total of 183.
In the Snead Flight, Daniel Schivits fired a 2-day total of 199 and finished in 12th place.
Senior Palmer John Smallenburg finished in 8th place after firing rounds of 83-91 for a total of 174.
Senior Sarazen Doug Perry (92-97) shot 189 for a T-17th finish and Kurt Beler shot 191 (94-97) for a 20th place finish.
And rounding out the competition, our Senior Snead flight participants had probably the best finish overall. Ronald Shoemaker came back from 5th place after round 1 to shoot a 2-day total of 183 (101-82) and earned co-medalist honors on day 2 of the event and a 2nd place finish in the flight. Shoemaker earns an automatic qualifying spot for his 2nd place effort to the 2011 Senior Nationals at PGA West. 2-time qualifier this year already, Charles Burger, tried to make it a 3rd time as he fired a 2-day total of 195 (97-98) but it wasn't quite good enough and he fell to 5th place only 2 strokes off of 3rd. Jim Laprade rounded out the competition with a 221 total (110-111) and took 13th.
The Cleveland Tour played really well at the Heartland Open and congratulates all of the qualifiers and look forward to seeing everyone down the road as we finish the season strong in the last few months of the season.
