Oh Deer, 2012 Golf Channel Am Tours of Cleveland and Pittsburgh Open Season
In the Palmer Flight, it was Jeff Mast who picked up where he left off in the 2011 season as he won his 1st event in the Palmer flight by 6 shots over D. J. Shaffer. Mast shot an 11-over par 83 to Shaffer's 89. Jeff Mast took an early lead on the par-3 4th hole by making birdie and gained a quick 4-stroke advantage as Shaffer made a triple-bogey. Mast then held on to the comfortable lead throughout the remainder of the round. Tom Betras finished in 3rd place with a 91.
The Sarazen Flight, saw a most entertaining finish as 4 different players had at least a share of the lead at some point during their round. The 4 players battled to the last hole as they all finished only 2 strokes apart at the end. Daniel Wood and Ben Hall ended up tied at 13-over par 85 and headed to a playoff for the championship. Charles Blasdel finished in 3rd place 1 shot back at 86. Charles held the lead going into the last hole, but was unable to par the par-5 18th. Blasdel triple-bogied the last hole and that slipped him to his 3rd place finish. Jeff Esper finished 4th with an 87, but he cleaned up on the skin money as he won 2 of the 3 flight skins and also one of only two giant skins awarded on the day. And after a playoff... Daniel Wood was the winner of the Sarazen flight over Ben Hall.
In the Jones Flight, Jerry O'Brien was trying to start the new season off on the right foot as he had built a 4 stroke lead well into his round. John Neff however, had other ideas as he stood on the 15th tee. Neff down by 4 on the 15th hole chipped away at O'Brien's lead by winning the 15th and 16th holes by 1 stroke each. Then on the par-4 17th hole Neff made par to O'Brien's triple bogey and that 3 shot swing was all that was needed to give Neff the 1 stroke victory. John Neff won with an 87 and Jerry O'Brien finished 2nd with an 88. Mark Bobak finished in 3rd place with a 93.
And in the Snead Flight, Ron Shoemaker and Charles Burger resumed their friendly rivalry on the course as the two battled out for the top 2 positions in the Snead flight. It was Shoemaker (96) who bettered his friend Burger (101) by 5 shots. Jim Laprade finished in 3rd place with a 106.

Tour Championship a Splendid Way to End...
Warren, OH- Avalon Lakes Country Club has had a great history of hosting a few big events in its time. They have hosted the LPGA's event in Northeast Ohio for many years. For the last 3 years now, the Country Club has hosted the Tour Championship for the Golf Channel Am Tour of Cleveland and Pittsburgh. This 2-tour combined year end championship looked to send as many players as possible to the upcoming 2011 National Championships at PGA West in a few weeks.
Under great sunny weather with temps in the 80's play on the course was pristine. Many of the pins were tucked near water and other trouble that made it a great test of golf before the season ended.
In the Palmer Flight, it was John Hilinski who shot an 85 to defeat Dustin Cramer (90) by 5 shots. Hilinksi built an early lead but couldn't hold it around the turn as his lead twice went down to 1 shot early on the back nine over Cramer, but then lengthened it out over the final few holes and was able to take home the trophy. Tom Betras finished in 3rd with a 94.
In the Hogan Flight, it was Jeff Mast who took the title shooting an 80. Abram Boyd (81) finished 2nd 1-shot back and Dale Thompson (83) was 3-shots back. It was Thompson who had the early round lead taking a 2-shot lead at the turn. As the 3 players headed down the stretch they were all tied going into the 14th hole where Mast closed by making 2 pars down the stretch while Boyd was only able to make 1. That amounted to the difference in the score and Mast held on. It was James Huber who took the Senior Hogan Flight by shooting a 91.
The Sarazen Flight saw Ben Hall victorious by shooting an 86 which was 2-shots better than Chris Ramaglia (88) and 3 better than Matt Blum (89). Both Ramaglia and Blum saw their rounds undone by triple bogeying the par-5 11th hole. But they were still only 1-shot back going into the closing holes. It was Hall who edged them both out on the last hole with a par.
In the Senior Sarazen Flight, it was Charles Blasdel and Charles Worth Jr. who would need extra holes to decide who was the Tour Champion. both players shot 89 on their regulation round then played the 1st, 18th, and then the 1st hole again in a 3-hole playoff that finally decieded the title. It was Charles Blasdel who came out on top of the 3-hole playoff. Keith Miller finished in 3rd place with a 91.
The Jones Flight saw Johnny Owens shoot an 84 to clinch his Tour Championship trophy by 6 shots. Tied for 2nd was Pat Herron and Charles Dozier
And rounding out the competition the Senior Snead flight was captured by Ronald Shoemaker who defeated Charles Burger by 1-shot. Burger held a 5-shot lead during the round that Shoemaker cut into on the closing holes to tie the match going to the 18th. It was Shoemaker who bogied the last hole to win and take home the trophy.
Thank you to all players who came out and played this season on the tour. Much fun was had by all and we look forward to having those who qualified during the season do well out at PGA West in La Quinta, California September 18-27th.
Good Luck! And for those who did not qualify or can't go to Nationals, we shall see you soon for the start of the 2012 season in October!

Weather makes for a fun day at Chardon Lakes...
Chardon, OH- Weather was the early story of the day as the Golf Channel Am Tour of Cleveland held its last regular season event at Chardon Lakes Golf Club this weekend. Heavy rain and intermittent thunder and lightening caused a 30-minute delay during the early holes of the tournament before the resumption of play and brightening skies allowed for the completion of the event. The 21 players challenged the tight tree lined course which was built back in the 1930's and Jack Nicklaus still holds the course record at 67 from the tips of the 6800 yard course.
In the Palmer Flight, John Smallenburg (81) claimed a 1-stroke victory over John Hilinski (82). Tom Betras finished 3rd shooting an 88. Smallenburg and Hilinski went back and forth sharing the lead but neither player gaining more than a 2-stroke lead at any one time. Finally on the 12th hole Smallenburg made par there to regain the lead. Smallenburg and Hilinski then went back and forth winning the next couple of holes with pars and keeping the lead at 1 for Smallenburg allowing him to take the win down the stretch.
In the Hogan Flight, Jeff Mast won for the 4th time on the Cleveland Tour this season as he carded an 82 and won by 1-stroke over Abram Boyd (83) and Ed Ruper (83) who tied for 2nd place. Boyd was tied with Mast going into the 17th hole while Ruper was 2-shots back. Ruper birdied 17, Mast pared, and Boyd bogied which allowed Mast to take the lead on Boyd and solidified the win as all 3 made bogies on the par-4 18th to close it out.
In the Sarazen Flight, Christopher Ramaglia won for the 1st time on the Golf Channel Am Tour as he shot an 82. He won by 3-strokes over Ben Hall in 2nd place with an 85. Jason Morrison finished in 3rd place with an 88. Ramaglia was steady as he made 9 pars in his round and scattered his bogies and 2 double bogies on his card for the win.
And rounding out the Jones Flight, it was Peter Gitnik who got himself a weekend double as he won the Pittsburgh event on Saturday and won Sunday as well at Chardon Lakes carding an 80. Pat Herron finished in 2nd place with an 85 and Raymone Scott shot an 87 for 3rd place. Gitnik coasted to his 5-stroke victory led by his front nine 39 and making birdie on the par-3 14th hole were highlights in his round.

August Member Spotlight...
Ronald Shoemaker
Cleveland Tour
Senior Snead Flight
At 70 years of age, Ronald Shoemaker has had many opportunities in life to experience things he is passionate about. The Golf Channel Am Tour gives Ron the chance to take 2 of those likes and combine them together for a very enjoyable experience. Ron combines his love for traveling around the country in his recreational vehicle and his golfing passion to compete on not only the Cleveland tour, which is his home tour, but because of his equidistance to both the Columbus and Pittsburgh tours as well, he enjoys the best of all 3 tours on his yearly schedule. His year thus far has demonstrated his want for travel as he has won 3 events, one on each of the 3 tours he has played on.
Of Ron's 3 victories this year, Longaberger on the Columbus schedule is one of his favorite courses to play. He has won twice there in both of his seasons on tour. He also attributes Little Mountain Golf Club on the Cleveland Tour and Olde Stonewall on the Pittsburgh tour as other favorite stops he likes to compete at.
He has also had great success at the Majors this year as he finished 2nd at the Swan Lake Major in Indiana and took 3rd place at the recent Greenbrier Open Major, which qualifies him for the 2011 Senior National Championship in September.
Ronald Shoemaker is what the Am Tour is all about as he travels the country playing courses that he says he "would never have a chance to play otherwise if it were not for the Am Tour." "Where else can you play TPC Sawgrass, Old White TPC at the Greenbrier, and get a chance to visit the Golf Hall of Fame at World Golf Village while playing in St. Augustine " he states. So if you see Ron down the road in his recreational vehicle please stop by and say "hi", because he will surely be on another wonderful golfing adventure.

A Grand Time at Greenbrier...
White Sulphur Springs, WV-18 players on the Cleveland and Pittsburgh Tours of the Golf Channel Am Tour went to White Sulphur Springs , West Virginia to test their skills against other amateurs and the PGA Tour. The Old White TPC and Greenbrier Courses at the Greenbrier Resort hosted the Greenbrier Open Major the weekend of August 13-14th. It was just 2 weeks after the PGA Tour came to town for the Greenbrier Classic, and the course showed no wear. Players were anxious to see how they compared versus the Tour.
In the Hogan Flight, Jeff Mast and Michael Yates competed and it was Jeff Mast who was consistent in his 2 rounds shooting a pair of 78's (156) from the blue tees and winning the Greenbrier Open in his flight! Jeff had previously qualified for nationals with a 3rd place finish at the Swan Lake Major in the Sarazen flight, but now further validated his move to the Hogan flight with this win. Michael Yates shot rounds of 85-88 (173) to finish in a tie for 12th.
In the Sarazen Flight, Christopher Casto and Matt Blum were competing and although both had bad rounds on one of the 2 days of the tournament they still had lots of fun. Casto shot rounds of 103-90 (193) for an 18th place finish and Blum shot 93-107 (200) for a 22nd place finish.
In the Jones Flight, Jerry O'Brien competed and was tied for the lead after day 1 with a 91. He couldn't hold on to the lead as he played the more difficult Greenbrier Course and shot a 2nd day 100 (191) which was still good for 5th place.
In the Snead Flight, K Steven Wiley and Ben McDonald competed. Both fared well on the courses and Wiley shot rounds of 106-94 (200) which was good enough for 3rd place earning him an automatic qualifying spot in the 2011 National Championship. McDonald wasn't far behind as he shot rounds of 107-108 (215) as he finished in 9th place.
In the Senior Hogan Flight, James Huber shot consistent rounds of 89-88 (177) to finish in a tie for 8th place.
In the Senior Sarazen Flight, Keith Miller, Nora Faller, and Dallas Kelley all competed. Miller and Faller had good showings as they finished 5th and 6th place respectively. Miller shot rounds of 85-94 (179) and Faller was 1-stroke behind at 91-89 (180). Dallas Kelley withdrew after a 1st round 94.
In the Senior Jones Flight, Russ Hittle had a stellar weekend as he shot rounds of 89-93 (182) to take 2nd place. He earns a 2011 Senior National Championship automatic qualifier spot for his play. Peter Gitnik had solid rounds of 92-97 (189) to finish 6th. Johnny Owens was 4 strokes back of Gitnik as he shot rounds of 96-97 (193) for a tie for 8th place. And Jon Neff was 12th with scores of 102-97 (199).
And in the Senior Snead Flight, Ronald Shoemaker earned a 3rd place finish shooting rounds of 96-107 (203) and earning his 2nd automatic qualifying spot of the year to the 2011 Senior National Championship after finishing in the top-3 of the Swan Lake Major. Michael Scuro finished with rounds of 100-106 (206) to finish in 5th place. And Charles Burger rounded out the competition with scores of 113-94 (207) to finish in a tie for 6th place.
A great time was had by all Cleveland and Pittsburgh Tour players at this great facility. We look forward to finishing the season in the next couple of weeks and wish all those who qualify for the 2011 National Championships good luck as they travel to La Quinta, California in September.
Standing Up to the Test...Aurora Country Club Recap
Aurora, OH- The Golf Channel Am Tour of Cleveland wanted to put Aurora Country Club on its schedule quickly after it had changed hands and went from a private club to a public one. Little did it know how difficult it was to finally get it on the schedule. After technical difficulties prevented it from being on the schedule earlier in the 2011 season, it was finally added to the schedule August 6th and the weather held perfect for the early morning tournament. After a previous couple of days of heavy rain, the course was still very wet as they had taken on about 4 inches in the last week, neverless the 28 players were ready for a challenge.
In the Palmer flight, it was Ben Lehrke who shot an 80 to take the trophy winning by 6 shots over John Smallenburg (86). James Brundage finished in 3rd place shooting a 93. Lehrke shot an even par 36 on the front nine with 2 birdies and coasted to the end holding his 6 shot lead.
In the Hogan flight, Michael Sylvia shot a winning 83 to fend off tough comeptition from both Dale Thompson and Brandon Wang who tied for 2nd at 84. Sylvia playing his 1st tournament on the Cleveland Tour made it successful by comming back from a 5-stroke defecit on the back nine spurred by a birdie on the 15th hole that ultimately gave him the 2-shot swing to take the lead from Thompson and the win.
Another close battle was staged in the Sarazen flight as Charles Blasdel shot 80 to fend off another tie for 2nd 1-stroke back between Christopher Ramaglia and Charles Worth Jr. The tournament was ultimately staged between the last 4 holes as Ramaglia held a 1-stroke lead on Blasdel and Worth. Blasdel made par on all 4 holes, Worth bogied 15, and Ramaglia bogied 2 of the final 4 holes to decide the title. It was a great finish on the challenging holes.
And in the Jones flight to round out the competition, Russ Hittle got out to a quick start to his round and led by 4 shots early. Making 2 birdies on his card en route to an 82 allowed him to hold on for a 4-stroke victory over Scott Cummings (86) and a 2-way tie for 3rd place between Charles Dozier and Pat Herron (90).
It was a fun tournament for all as many have liked playing the course at Aurora Country Club, but perhaps the most fun was from Matt Blum who really stood the test of time. His 2nd ever round of golf was played on the back nine at Aurora Country Club 25 years prior. He then carded an 86 ONLY ON THE BACK NINE! Today, he carded an 86 on the full 18-hole course. What a test of time for both him and the course.
Only 1 tournament remains in the regular season as we move to Chardon Lakes Golf Club Sunday, August 21st for the last event before the Tour Championship at Avalon Lakes the next Saturday. Please come and enjoy these last 2 remaining courses on our schedule.

The last 2 weekends have provided an off weekend for some and for others it was a way to test their game as a higher level of competition as Regional Majors were on the schedule. On the weekend of July 16-17th 2 players went down to challenge TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, while 4 more golfers challenged 2 courses at the Turning Stone Resort on the weekend of July 23-24th.
Down at TPC Sawgrass, Sarazen Flight player Matt Blum and Senior Hogan player Kevin Muehring were up for the task of taking on the challenging course and conditions at the Stadium and Valley Courses. Playing in sunny and 90 degree conditions, the courses were in great condition with very thick rough throughout. The rough made for tough decisions on the course cause many of the errant balls that found the rough did not get good lies. None the less both had lots of fun playing the challenging layouts.
In the Senior Hogan Flight, Kevin Muehring shot scores of 100 (Stadium) and 87 (Valley) to total 187 and finish tied of 8th place. One of his great memories on the weekend was probably hitting the famed 17th green and taking his par.
As for Matt Blum in the Sarazen flight, it was a big celebration for him as he got to celebrate his 33rd birthday by getting the tournament underway on the Stadium Course on Saturday. His tee shot, which was the first stroke of the tournament, sailed down the right rough about 130 yards away from the hole. Much of the rest of the weekend was enjoyable, but he felt bad he didn't bring his "A" game to the course. He shot 105 (Stadium) and 107 (Valley) for a 212 total and finished in 20th place. Bright spots in his round were that he made a nice 12 footer for birdie on the 13th at the Stadium course and took home a skin as well as nearly driving #16 in two and getting a par. He also hit the green on #17 in one, but found himself on the wrong section of the green and had to take a 3-putt bogey.
In upstate New York, the 4 players that went to Turning Stone Resort had a swell time also. Led by the play of Hogan flight player Brandon Wang who finished 5th in his flight. Wang shot rounds of 84-81 to finish at a 2-day total of 165 and was only 4 shots back of the lead. He posted the medalist round on Sunday with his 81 in the Hogan Flight.
Snead flight player Ben McDonald shot 120-107 for a 227 total and finished 18th in his flight.
Senior Palmer John Smallenburg finished with a steady 2-day total of 163 (82-81) and was 6 strokes back of the lead in 8th place.
and rounding out the players who went to a regional event these past 2 weekends was Senior Sarazen flight player Peter Gitnik who shot a pair of 101's to total 202 and ended up in 13th place.
We hope to see everyone out on tour for the summer finish as we make the final push to qualify for the 2011 National Championships at PGA West in La Quinta, California September 18-27.

Golfers Heating Up in the Valley... Hawthorne Valley Recap
Solon, OH- The Golf Channel Am Tour of Cleveland hosted a great event at Hawthorne Valley Country Club as temperatures soared into the 90's and the humidity was also elevated causing a very hot day on the course for 26 golfers. An old 1926 Donald Ross design caused many fits for the golfers as the course has many small undulated greens with narrow fairways and many position or placement shots off the tee.
In the Palmer Flight, Dustin Cramer won by shooting an 85 defeating John Hilinksi (89) by 4 strokes. John Smallenburg finished 3rd with a 92. Cramer held the lead throughout the round but finally took control on the back 9 and pulled away down the stretch for the win.
In the Hogan Flight, Kevin Double had a really good round earning medalist honors with a 77 to win. Double started out kinda rocky bogeying his first 5 holes, then making 4 birdies later in his round to steady himself for a 5 stroke victory over Cliff Salvatore (82). Dale Thompson finished in 3rd place with an 84.
In the Sarazen Flight, Maryland Tour player John Kennedy came back to play his 2nd Cleveland Tour event this season and this time was victorious as he carded an 86 to defeat Matt Blum (89) and Pat Herron (89) by 3 strokes. Kennedy was tied with Herron going into the signature hole number 17 at Hawthorne Valley where Kennedy made par and took his 3 stroke lead on Herron there. Blum got down by a bunch early on the back 9 and was making a late charge only to run out of holes and tied Herron.
In the Jones Flight, it was a playoff that decided the winner. Scott Cummings and Russ Hittle were tied at 88 strokes at the end of regulation 18 holes. They both went back out to the 1st tee to playoff and it was Cummings who smoothly hit his tee shot down the fairway and onto the green for a 2-putt par to defeat Hittle who missed the green right and couldn't get up and down to save par and extend the playoff. Bob Troha finished in 3rd place with a 93.
And in the Championship Flight, Ben Lehrke shot an 80.
Thanks to all who came out to the event at Hawthorne Valley. 95 more dollars are going into our pot for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation through our 50/50 charity raffle this season. We have now totaled $1365 and are 68 percent complete towards our goal of $2000.
We look forward to seeing everyone at our next event Saturday, July 30th at Raccoon Hill Golf Course.

Heartland Open Weekend Recap...
Plymouth, IN- The 3rd major of the season for the Northeast Section of the Golf Channel Am Tour is in the books and the Cleveland Tour represented themselves very well at the event. With great weather to play in as temperatures were in the low to mid 80's with partly cloudy skies and no rain after rain had dampened the course during the week before the event. The Black and the Silver Courses at the Swan Lake Resort were the co-host courses to 183 golfers in 11 different divisions as they played to decide who would win their flight of the Heartland Open.
In the Championship Flight, it was Sam DiPaola III who finished in 7th place for the Cleveland Tour. He shot 77-84 for a 2-day total of 151 and finished 6 strokes back of 3rd place.
In the Palmer Flight, Tylor Davis bounced back with a 2nd round 81 for a 2-day combined total of 171 and also finished in 7th place in his flight. He moved up from 11th position at the end of day 1 and finished 5 strokes away from 3rd place.

Volunteer Opportunities for the Mylan Classic in Cannonsburg, PA
As we go out each weekend to the course and play for fun with friends or in our Golf Channel Am Tour events, many of us envision making a shot that would win us a prestigious event on the professional level. Whether it be for the US Open, The Masters, or just the local PGA Tour event in our hometowns, each of us has the desire to know what it is like to be a professional golfer. Well in September, we can find out what it is like to be a professional golfer by volunteering in the Nationwide Tour's Mylan Classic, which is going to be held September 1st-4th at the Southpointe Golf Club in Cannonsburg , Pennsylvania .
We may have played professional level tournament courses in our golfing career, so we may know what course conditions to expect for these skilled golfers to attack, but have you ever been able to see what they do and think from inside the ropes? As members of the Golf Channel Am Tour of Pittsburgh and Cleveland , we have the distinct opportunity to be hole marshals on the 1st hole of the Southpointe Golf Club during the Mylan Classic Golf Tournament of the PGA's Nationwide Tour.
We will be able to hear what its like to be announced on the 1st tee during a professional event, and hear some of what the caddie/player exchanges might be if they hit their tee shots wayward into the rough as we guard them from the patrons of the golf tournament, and see them hit some great and maybe not so great shots on the golf course. It will be a fun time to work at a professional event.
Last year, Larry Hoffman, Peter Gitnik, and Matt Blum worked during the weekend of the tournament and had a blast in doing so. The experience gained by these 3 people in working the professional event and learning what the pros do was invaluable. Matt even got to meet Honorary Chairman of the tournament Arnold Palmer who is serving as a host to the Mylan Classic. Matt as a volunteer got to shake Mr. Palmer's hand and had a small chat with him as Mr. Palmer made his way around the course while following his grandson Sam Saunders who was a participant.
So won't you show the Nationwide Tour your volunteer spirit and help us marshal the 1st hole of this wonderful Pittsburgh area tournament? If you would like to sign up as a volunteer please contact either Mr. Larry Hoffman or sign up online at https://events.r2it.com/volunteer/mylan/2011/ and mention that you are with the Golf Channel Am Tour and would like to marshal on the 1st hole.
We look forward to seeing you there and watching the next stars on the PGA Tour in action in the Pittsburgh Area!

Gone In A Flash... Players on Am Tour Attack Windmill.
Ravenna, OH- Don Quixote never had anything on the home course of the Kent State University Golf Team, which was the host for this weeks Windmill Lakes Golf Course event. 32 players took to the course, avenging the windmill in the lake on the 1st hole, to see who had the best game of the day in beautiful warm conditions with a hint of a sprinkle in the air. Many low scores were carded as the course was in excellent condition after hosting a large junior tournament in the past week.
In the Palmer Flight, it was Joseph Smith who won by shooting an 81 beating John Hilinski (83) by 2 strokes. There was a 3-way tie for 3rd place as John Smallenburg, Dustin Cramer, and Jeffrey Yannarell all shot 84. Smith was in the lead most of the round but found himself in close quarters as a couple of his pursuers were tied with him going into the 16th hole. A birdie on the 16th hole by Joseph Smith was the deciding hole in the match and he was able to hold on.
In the Hogan Flight, Lloyd Cantebury, who plays out of the Maryland Tour, came into town to visit with family and play in the event with some friends. His stellar play shooting 74 took medalist honors and the Hogan Flight title. He won by 4 strokes over Abram Boyd (78) who increased his Callaway Order of Merit lead by his 2nd place finish. Paul Rovnak finished 3rd with an 81. Cantebury was hot out of the gate making 2 birdies in his first 2 holes and coasted around the course attacking the pins all day.
In the Sarazen Flight, Matt Blum's round was not starting out well as he quickly was fading into black. Never did he think that he would then turn his card around and shoot his lowest round on tour in his 4 years of playing Am Tour events. Well, that is what happened to him as he shot a 43-36 to card a 79 in route to a 6 stroke win over Ed Newland (85). Peter Gitnik and Russ Hittle tied for 3rd place with 90's. Blum played the last 12 holes in 2-over par which included 2 birdies and 7 pars. This enabled him to come back from a large defecit early in the round and take the lead early on in the back nine for his 3rd victory of the year.
In the Jones Flight, it was Jeff Oliver claiming the title shooting an 88 and defeating Jerry O'Brien (91) by 3 strokes. Kevin Allen was 3rd shooting a 105. Oliver got out to a decent lead in the round before a late charging effort by O'Brien just wasn't enough.
And in the Snead Flight, it was Raymone Scott who carded an 85 to defeat Jim Laprade (91) by 6 strokes. Charles Burger was 3rd with a 95. Scott started out hot and fired a 2-over 37 on the front, and then found himself tied going into the 15th hole before taking the lead again and holding on.
Thanks to all who attended this wonderful event. We wish those who are going to the Heartland Open Major next weekend in Plymouth, IN good luck as the local schedule in Cleveland takes the week off. The next Cleveland tour event will be Saturday, July 9th at Hawthorne Valley Country Club in Solon, Oh.
And as a footnote to this recap, we have now raised 63% of our goal of $2000 towards our 50/50 raffles benefiting the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. A total of $1270 has been donated thus far. Thank you for that and we will be giving a check to the JDRF at the Cleveland Walk for Diabetes held at the Cleveland Zoo in September.

Copeland Hills Recap
Columbiana, OH- In a week where many were planning graduation parties or the start of the spring and summer travel seasons, 12 players took to competition at Copeland Hills Golf Course to decide who would be champion in the Golf Channel Am Tour Copeland Hills event on the Cleveland Tour. The weather was very hot for the first time this season as temperatures reached into the 90's for the first time this year. Humidity was also up and rain showers were around the area but did not fall on the tournament. It made for a tough course where the greens were rock hard and although the course was drying out from all the rain it had recieved this season, the rough was short but bunchy and grabbing shots.
In the Hogan Flight, it was Dale Thompson (79) who held off Brett Gaylord (82) and Abram Boyd (82) by 3 shots. Thompson was neck and neck with both golfers before starting to pull away in the final few holes. The low scores from all three competitors were keyed by them making pars or better on many of the holes. Each of the 3 players had at least half of their holes played in par or better. James McNair finished 4th.
In the Sarazen Flight, Michael Yates shot a 78 leading all scorers on the course in route to a 7-stroke victory over Charles Blasdel (85). Kurt Beler placed 3rd with an 87. Yates was attacking pins and scrambling all day to make 2 birdies and 9 pars on his card, finishing with a 6-over par total.
In the Jones Flight, Scott Cummings shot a 91 to claim a 3 stroke victory over Kevin Allen (94). Cummings jumped out to a 5-stroke lead early only to watch the lead change hands and then be tied going into the 14th. He was able to make birdie on the par-5 14th to reclaim the lead and hold on.
And in the Palmer Flight, Tylor Davis shot an 82.
We look forward to seeing everyone on Sunday, June 19th at Windmill Lakes Golf Course. Enjoy Father's Day on the links and come watch the end of the US Open in the clubhouse after the conclusion of our tournament. Windmill Lakes is the home of the Kent State University Golf Team, who are one of the top NCAA Men's teams in the country. It is also the college home course of Ben Curtis, the former British Open Champion.

Cleveland Rocks!
State Line Ohio/Pennsylvania Border- Once again it was Rivalry Week for the Cleveland and Pittsburgh Golf Channel Amateur Tours. For 4 years running both teams from rival cites duked it out at Oak Tree Country Club situated on the border of the two competing states. This year was no different as many of the players on both sides dressed in team colors to declare war on the other side. Cleveland had many players wearing their famous brown and orange while those from Pittsburgh were fashioned in Black and Gold. Even Larry (begrudgingly) got into the act to pay off his bet from last year as he wore a Cleveland Browns hat and shirt to declare that the Cleveland team was victorious the previous season.
In this years clash, the players were to play their own individual stroke tournament for individual accolades in their flight and to decide who won the clash, it was determined that it would be decided by an overall Giant Skins game. The team who had the most Giant Skins won would be declared the victor since the Cleveland Team had outnumbered the Pittsburgh Team by a margin of 1.5 to 1 in players.
In the Palmer Flight, it was Tylor Davis (CLE) shooting an 81 to capture the win by 1 shot over Jason Kidd's (PIT) 82. John Hilinski's (CLE) 85 was good enough for 3rd place. A back and forth match between Davis and Kidd had both players changing leads a couple of times, but it was Kidd who had the lead on the back side and was overtaken by Davis late and held on during the last 2 holes to win. Davis' 11 pars were a key to him playing well and having the opportunity to win.
In the Hogan Flight, Pittsburgh got on the board with Fred Favorite winning with a score of 77. He defeated a couple of Cleveland Tour rivals in Dale Thompson and Abram Boyd who fired 82's. Favorite carded 2 birdies and 8 pars in his round of 6-over holding off Thompson who was tied for the lead after 12 holes. It was the first time in 5 tournaments this season that Abram Boyd did not claim the Hogan Flight crown. It was the 3rd win of the season for Fred Favorite.
The Sarazen Flight saw a close battle of Cleveland players in Matt Blum and Jeff Mast. Both have been sharing the spotlight this season winning 4 of the first 5 tournaments thus far on the Cleveland schedule. Mast getting the upper hand thus far 3-1 in wins. But Matt Blum (84) was the winner this week eking out a win over Mast (85) by 1 shot to garner his 2nd victory of the season. Pittsburgh's Robert Babish and Michael Yates tied for 3rd with 88's.
The Snead Flight it was Ronald Shoemaker (CLE) (89) who defeated Michael Scuro (PIT) (92) and Paul Beckwith (CLE) 96. It was Shoemaker's 2nd win of the season as he was able to build a large lead and hold on for the 3 stroke victory.
Now for all the news everyone was waiting for... For the team title. It was the Cleveland tour who was victorious for the 4th consecutive year as the Giant Skins were decided with a score of 5-2. John Hilinski (CLE) and Dale Thompson (CLE) both had 2 skins a piece for and Jeff Mast added another for the winning team. Fred Favorite and Steven Wiley got Pittsburgh on the board. So once again next season Larry must don the Brown and Orange as the two teams will meet.
We would also like to extend a large thanks to tour player Paul Rovnak who provided the event with wonderful danish, donuts, and brownies from his Classic Bakery in the Youngstown/Boardman area.
The tour is also happy to announce that so far we have combined to raise just over $1000 in our charitable giving for the 50/50 raffles to benefit the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. This is approximately halfway to our goal. Thank you to all who are participating!

Better Weather Around The Corner... Little Mountain Scores Too.
Concord, OH- Much better weather finally hit the North Coast of Cleveland this weekend as temperatures soared into the 90's, the scores dipped lower, and competition was fierce on the familiar Little Mountain Country Club. The sunny day was a welcome addition to the day as the course was still trying to dry out from rain it had taken in the preceding few days. 37 players took to the course to see who reigned supreme at Little Mountain.
In the Championship flight, Ben Lehrke shot 78 to win by 10 strokes over John Wozniak (88). Jeffrey Yannarell finished 3rd with an 89. Lehrke played a solid front nine (37) and then added to his lead as the round progressed to have a comfortable margin of victory.
In the Palmer flight, it was Dustin Cramer (88) going to the winners circle for the 2nd time this season narrowly defeating Tom Betras (89) by 1 stroke. The match went back and forth with both player taking the lead, but it was all tied going into the tough 18th hole where Cramer made par to clinch the win.
In the Hogan flight, it was a true war of attrition. The top 7 places were separated by only 4 strokes and it took 3 playoff holes for the championship to be won. Abram Boyd (80) was the champion over Brandon Wang (80). It was Boyd's 4th win this season in his 4th tournament played and he has kept lowering his score each tournament. Kevin Double finished 3rd with an 81.
Another playoff occured in the Sarazen Flight, where Jeff Mast (82) defeated Michael Yates (82) in a 1-hole playoff. It was Mast's third victory this year. Justin Petty finished 3rd with an 86.
In the Jones flight, Edward Kocin (84) was victorious over Ted Heindel (91) and Scott Cummings (95). Kocin played a solid round with 7 pars and 2 birdies en route to his 7-stroke victory.
The competition was rounded out in the Snead flight, where Charles Burger (92) won for the 3rd time this season by 2 strokes over Ronald Shoemaker (94). Bob Troha finished 3rd with a 96. Burger had built a moderate lead and was able to hold after only leading by 1 stroke going into the 18th hole.
We congratulate all the players in this week's tournament and look forward to next Sunday's tour challenge event where the strong Cleveland team will go up against their rivals from the Pittsburgh team at Oak Tree Country Club on the Ohio/Pennsylvania State Line.

Mother Nature Again Creates Havoc for Am Tour.
Streetsboro, OH- Mother Nature again was not favorable to the contestants of the Golf Channel Am Tour of Cleveland as the rough again was not able to be mowed and played very wet, thick, and tough. Having to make special rules considerations for the unusual length and unplayability of the rough, tour officials had to declare the rough as "abnormal playing grounds" under rule 25-2. This allowed the player to take a free drop at the point of where the ball crossed into the "abnormal grounds" (rough) with out penalty only if they lost their ball in the rough. If the ball was found in the rough, it must be played from its spot or take other options with penalty.
With these rules in place, it was Rob Adamson (91) who defeated John Wozniak (95) in the Championship Flight.
In the Palmer Flight, it was Joseph Smith (79) who defeated Tylor Davis (80) by 1 shot. Smith had built up a 4-stroke lead on the back nine by shooting 1-over par then held on after the turn as Davis was trying to make it a match with a late rally. John Smallenburg finished in 3rd place with a 85. It was Smith's 2nd win of the season.
For the 2nd event in a row in the Hogan Flight, it was Abram Boyd (83) defeating Ed Ruper(84) by 1-stroke. Dale Thompson also tied for 2nd shooting 84. The 3-way battle for the title was very close throughout the round. Ruper was again on form making 2 more birdies in his round and all 3 players were tied going into the par-5 18th hole. It was Boyd who made par and walked away with the trophy.
In the Sarazen Flight, it was expecting father Ed Newland who took away the hardware shooting an 81 and defeating Jeff Mast (86) by 5-strokes. Ben Hall and Denny Briceland finished 3rd with 88's. Newland was solid in his play turning in 40 and making 9 pars and a birdie in his round.
In the Senior Sarazen Flight, it was Kurt Beler (85) who held off Charles Blasdel (86) by 1-stroke. Joseph Scholtz (89) finished in 3rd. In a back and forth match which outside of the first couple of holes, the lead never was more than 2-strokes, it was Beler who held a 2-stroke lead and held on at the 18th to win.
In the Jones Flight, it was Ted Heindel who won his 2nd tournament of the season by shooting an 87. He defeated Raymone Scott (88) by 1-stroke. Scott Cummings finished in 3rd place with a 92. Heindel cruised out to a 6-shot lead an saw it start to evaporate by a 1-over par stretch in 5 holes by Raymone Scott. Heindel was able to hang on though on the last hole for the victory.
The next evet is going to be held on May 28th at Little Mountain Country Club in Concord, Ohio. It is the sister course to Stonewater Country Club which was played a few weeks ago.
We would also like to thank everyone for keeping up with the 50/50 raffle benefiting the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Thusfar, we have raised close to $750 dollars and are well on our was towards our goal.

Tough Conditions Make For a Hard Day at Stonewater.
Highland Heights, OH- It has not been the greatest start of the golfing season here in Northeast Ohio as rain has plagued the area and made many of the courses in the area much tougher than they normally will play. With US Open type rough very thick and trapping many of the balls hit in its direction, the course played very long and challenging.
In the Palmer Flight, Joseph Smith shot an 88 and took the title holding off James Brundage (94) and Tom Betras (95). Smith had came back on the back nine to gain the lead and hold off Brundage who took a 4-stroke lead after 9 holes.
In the Hogan Flight, Abram Boyd won his 2nd tournament in as many attempts as he shot an 84 defeating Ed Ruper (85) by 1 shot. Kevin Double finished in 3rd place with an 87. Despite 3 birdies from Ed Ruper during his round, it was not enough as Boyd rallied from 4-strokes down in the final holes to sneek out the win on the 18th. It was a very competitive flight this week as 13 players competed and the top 6 spots were only separated by 6 shots.
In the Sarazen Flight, 12 golfers competed and it was Jeff Mast who picked up his 2nd win of the season shooting an 81. He coasted through his round making 2 birdies and led throughout and finished 7-strokes ahead of the field. He also posted the low round of the day on the course. Dave Cress (88) finished 2nd and Matt Blum and Michael Yates tied for 3rd both shooting 92.
In the Jones Flight it was Edward Kocin (96) who bested Kevin Allen (132).
In the Snead Flight, Charles Burger (96) won in a playoff over Raymone Scott (96) on the 1st hole to capture his 2nd win of the season. Bob Troha (101) finished 3rd.
The next tournament is at Boulder Creek on May 14th. Hopefully the weather will turn around soon here in Northeast Ohio.

Am Tour of Cleveland Kicks Off Season At Sawmill Creek.
Huron, Ohio- The Golf Channel Am Tour of Cleveland hosted its season opening event on Saturday, April 30th, at the Sawmill Creek Resort. Playing in cold and damp weather, it has not been the ideal conditions that most Northeast Ohio golfers wanted in the beginning of their season. The course had taken on 3 inches of rain in the last 10 days and 2 inches of it came at once on Monday before the tournament. Thanks to the great effort of the course's maintenance staff to mow the rough and pump water out of the bunkers all morning, the tournament was enjoyable to the 30 participants that played in 5 divisions.
Starting with the Palmer Flight Dustin Cramer fired an 83 to beat Tom Betras (84) by 1 stroke. Tylor Davis (86) finished in 3rd place. It was Betras who led by 1 on the 18th tee but Dustin Cramer pulled it out by making a par.
In the Hogan Flight Abram Boyd (87) won by building a large lead on the front nine in route to shooting a 42 and then held on to defeat Ed Ruper (91) by 4 strokes. Dave Hout (94) finished in 3rd place.
Sarazen Flight winner Matt Blum (88) was looking for redemption as last week in Pittsburgh he held the lead going into the last hole only to lose by 1. This time he held the lead early by shooting a 39 on the front and went on to defeat Justin Petty (90) by 2 strokes. Ed Newland finished in 3rd place shooting a 92.
Redemption was also on the mind of Jones Flight winner Ted Heindel (90) who lost in a playoff the week before in Pittsburgh. Once again Heindel found himself going back out onto the course after being tied with playing partner Scott Cummings (90). It was a back and forth match between the two players. Neither player had led in the match by more than 2 strokes and Cummings had taken a 2 stroke lead into the last hole. On the 1st playoff hole Ted Heindel had hit the green in 2 and 3-putted for bogey which defeated Scott Cummings' double bogey. Greg Argenti (97) finished in 3rd place.
In the Snead Flight, Daniel Schivitz (93) won by 6 strokes over Greg Nemchick (99). Going into the 15th hole the match was tied and Daniel played the last 4 holes in 1-over par, including a birdie on the tough par-3 17th hole. Ronald Shoemaker (102) finished in 3rd place.
The Golf Channel Am Tours of Cleveland and Pittsburgh are joining forces to hold a 50-50 raffle at each event to benefit the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. At this weeks event, 130 dollars were raised. 65 dollars went to the winner of the drawing, Greg Argenti, and the other 65 dollars will be put with the donations from all of the events this year. To date this season a total of 220 dollars have been raised for the JDRF. Thank You!

Powerful Storm Rocks Kingsmill Resort!
Williamsburg, Va --- After the conclusion of play today at the Kingsmill Classic a powerful weather system that had caused many tornados, high winds, and lots of damage across the central United States has swept through the Williamsburg area and has caused damage to the Kingsmill Resort. Reports are that a tornado had touched down on the Kingsmill Resort property at the Woods Golf Course and caused damage to a few holes on the course and also to the Woods Course clubhouse. The storm has not apparently caused any damage to the 2 courses involved in the Kingsmill Classic, the River Course or the Plantation Course, and play will resume for round 2 starting at 8AM on both courses.
Round 1 Standings from the Kingsmill Classic.
Williamsburg, Va --- After Round 1 of the Kingsmill Classic 3 members of the Cleveland tour have battled tough course conditions in the wind and made a respectable showing. Kevin Allen is 19th in Jones, Sam Dipaola III is 10th in Championship, and Matt Blum is 13th in Sarazen.
Good Luck in round 2!

Kingsmill Classic Round 1 Feature Hole... #17 @ River Course.
Williamsburg, Va --- During round 1 of the Kingsmill Classic at the Kingsmill Resort today, 89 of the 180 players had the opportunity to play the 17th hole on the River Course. The 17th hole was set up today as a 178 yard par-3 hole which plays right along side the mighty James River. With cross winds of 25 miles per hour constant and gusting in upwards of 40+ miles per hour, the hole played very tough.
The 17th hole on the River Course and the James River to the right during a tranquil day.
The Senior Palmer flight which has golfers playing off of handicaps of 4-7.9 and age 50+ made 17 play as their toughest hole of the day with a stroke average of 4.40. That is a full 1.4 strokes above par.
The Senior Hogan flight with golfers aged 50+ playing off handicaps of 8-11.9, had a stroke average of 4.23 for 13 players. It was the 5th toughest hole for their flight.
The Hogan flight had 19 golfers attempt to hit the green on 17 in regulation and had a stroke average of 4.10 strokes. The lowest to par ratio of all the groups who played the hole on Saturday. It played to their 7th toughest hole of the round
21 Sarazen (12-15.9 handicap) flight players had a stroke average of 4.66 strokes and played hole 17 as their 4th toughest hole of the day.
The Snead flight got a slight break teeing up from about 133 yards and averaged 4.52 strokes which was their 6th hardest hole.
All in all 89 golfers of all abilities averaged 4.37 strokes on the hole with a low score of par (3) and a highest stroke total of 8. Many balls were either lost to the James River or could not be found on the left towards hole 16. Lots of players had to aim well out over the James to be able to ride the wind and land their ball on the green.
It was a very fun day to play this hole in the gale winds and lots of smiles, shouting, and rejoicing was shared by many who were lucky to hit the green.
Those lucky enough to play this hole on Sunday during round 2 will have it a bit easier as the weather forecast is for only 10-15 miles per hour wind off the James River.

Kingsmill Classic starts Tomorrow
Williamsburg, Va -- The Kingsmill Classic is ready to get underway as the course has been set up and marked by the Golf Channel Tournament Staff while playing and observing the course. Cleveland Tour members had the chance to practice on the Plantation Course all day and an afternoon shotgun start on the River Course in the late afternoon.
Our own tour director, Larry Hoffman even found a few hours of free time in between setting-up to play a few holes with Cleveland Tour member Matt Blum on the Plantation Course.
Here is Larry hitting a tee shot on the 9th hole.
The tournament is scheduled to get underway tomorrow morning (Saturday) at 8am with rain, high winds, and a chance of lightning and hail in the afternoon. Please stay posted as we will update on the events in Williamsburg.

Golf Channel Am Tour of Cleveland is on site at the Kingsmill Classic!
Staff and members of the Golf Channel Am Tour of Cleveland are currently on site preparing for the Kingsmill Classic Regional Tournament from their perch on the 9th fairway of the River Course. The 2-day tournament is being contested Saturday and Sunday on the Plantation and River Courses at the resort. Many golfers who followed the PGA and LPGA Tours will recognize the River Course from the past as the host course for events like the LPGA Michelob Ultra Championship and events on the PGA and Champions tour.
The River course's closing holes 16-18 are set beautifully along the James River and can play tough when there is a cross wind off or into the bay. How has anyone handled tough windy conditions off a large body of water near a course before? Any tips for playing in such windy conditions?
We wish a good luck to all Cleveland tour competitors this weekend and will update their statuses during the tournament.
Cleveland tour members playing this week in Williamsburg, Virginia are:
Kevin Allen
Matthew Blum
Sam DiPaola III
We will look forward to seeing everyone in 2 weeks at Sawmill Creek Resort in Sandusky, Ohio to kick off the local season.
